Initial Thoughts (Kickstarter Edition)

Designers / Publisher / Year: Ben Famiglietti / Puppet Arcade / 2024

Player Count / Playtime: 2-5 Players / 30-60 mins

Genre / Type / Mechanics: Party Game, Trivia, Bluffing

Initial Thoughts is a trivia game that I backed on Kickstarter, and it ended up being a pleasant surprise. Trivia games can sometimes feel repetitive, with players simply recalling obscure facts or answering questions that either you know or you don’t. Initial Thoughts takes a completely different approach.

Instead of asking direct trivia questions, the game gives players a prompt along with a limited set of letters. Your challenge is to come up with a correct answer using only those available letters. It sounds simple, but it’s much harder than you’d expect. Suddenly, you’re digging through your memory trying to think of anything that fits the category while also matching the letters you’ve been given.

That twist is what makes the game so much fun. It’s less about memorizing random facts and more about creatively applying what you already know. Everyone is working with the same restrictions, which leads to plenty of “How did I not think of that?” moments and makes every round feel different.

The game is quick to learn, easy to teach, and works well with a wide variety of players. Even people who normally shy away from traditional trivia games found themselves enjoying this one because the challenge feels fresh rather than intimidating.

Verdict: Initial Thoughts is one of the more unique trivia games I’ve played recently. The limited-letter mechanic transforms a familiar genre into something clever, challenging, and genuinely fun. If you’re tired of traditional trivia games, this is one that’s absolutely worth checking out.
