Some games win you over with their mechanics. Others win you over with their theme. Manatee Sanctuary managed to do both for me.
In Manatee Sanctuary, players take turns drafting cards that present an interesting choice. Each card can either be played for its action or added to one of your growing habitats to score points later. Throughout the game, you’ll balance building efficient habitats, making the most of each card’s abilities, and creating the best sanctuary for your gentle sea cows. The rules are straightforward, but there are enough meaningful decisions to keep every turn interesting.
One of the first things that stood out to me was how much the game reminded me of Pacific Ocean, another game I’ve reviewed. Both games revolve around the clever decision of whether to use a card for its immediate effect or commit it permanently to your tableau for long-term scoring. It’s a simple mechanism, but one that creates satisfying choices throughout the game.
The theme also gets bonus points from me on a personal level. My mom’s favorite animal, other than meerkats, of course, was the manatee. While we played, I had her old stuffed manatee sitting beside us, which made the experience feel a little more meaningful. That connection certainly made me smile and gave the game an extra layer of enjoyment that I wasn’t expecting.
Beyond that personal connection, Manatee Sanctuary is simply a relaxing game. It’s easy to learn, doesn’t overcomplicate its mechanics, and provides a calm, enjoyable puzzle from beginning to end. My wife and I especially enjoyed it as a two-player game, where every drafting decision feels just a little more important.
Verdict: Manatee Sanctuary is a charming, approachable card game that pairs thoughtful decisions with a wonderfully peaceful theme. If you enjoy games like Pacific Ocean that ask you to choose between immediate benefits and long-term planning, this one is well worth a look. It won’t overwhelm you with complexity, but that’s exactly the point. It’s an easy game to teach, a pleasant way to spend 30 minutes, and one that I’ll happily keep coming back to.
