Morels is a two-player card game about foraging for mushrooms in the woods, and it captures that feeling remarkably well. From the moment you sit down, there’s a gentle, unhurried quality to it, like a quiet walk through a forest on a cool morning.

The gameplay is straightforward set collection. A shared row of cards representing different mushroom varieties drifts toward you as the game progresses, and you’re picking up what you can, building sets in hand, and cooking them up to score points. It’s easy to learn, quick to set up, and rarely overstays its welcome at around thirty minutes, making it a perfect filler when you don’t have time or energy for something heavier.

What makes it sing is how it feels to play. The puzzle of deciding which mushrooms to take, when to cook, and how to manage your hand is genuinely satisfying without ever feeling stressful. It’s a relaxing, contemplative experience, the kind of game you can enjoy with a drink and good conversation without losing track of what you’re doing.

The two-player only format is worth highlighting. It makes Morels a natural fit for couples or pairs looking for something calm and engaging to share together, and that intimacy suits the game’s quiet mood perfectly.

The artwork deserves a special mention too. Each mushroom card is illustrated with real care and charm, giving the game a whimsical, almost storybook quality that elevates the whole experience. It’s the rare game where the components alone make you happy just to have it on the table.

Verdict: A quiet gem for two. Morels is exactly the kind of game couples should have on the shelf. Simple enough to play any night, charming enough to keep coming back to.
