Sea Salt & Paper is one of those games that looks simple at first. It’s just a small deck of cards with cute origami animals…but it sneaks up on you in the best way.
At its core, it’s a quick card collecting game. On your turn, you’re either drawing cards or playing sets, trying to build combinations that score points. Sounds familiar right? Except in this game, pairs give you special abilities, like stealing cards or taking extra turns, while larger sets rack up points toward victory. It’s easy to learn in about two minutes, but there’s just enough decision making to keep you engaged the whole time.
What really makes it shine is the push-your-luck element. Once you reach a certain point threshold, if you think you’re ahead, you can end the round and force everyone to reveal their hands and count their points. If you have the most, you’re rewarded with a big scoring opportunity, but if you’re wrong, you’re the one who gets punished instead. That creates constant tension throughout the round. Do you play it safe and keep building your hand, or trust your gut and end things early before your opponents can gain more points? You’re not just tracking your own progress, but also trying to read what everyone else might be holding, which adds a subtle layer of bluffing and risk assessment.
I also think that it is a thoughtful touch that the game includes a colorblind-friendly key with symbols for each color, making it more accessible without sacrificing its beautiful design. I have a colorblind friend, and he really enjoyed this aspect of the game.
Overall, the game is fast, a little sneaky, and surprisingly strategic for such a small package. The origami artwork is fantastic, and it somehow manages to feel both relaxing and competitive at the same time. Perfect for a quick game that somehow turns into five.
