Stack O’ Cats is a lighthearted dexterity game built around stacking colorful wooden cats into increasingly unstable towers. The gameplay is extremely simple: players take turns adding cats to the growing pile while trying not to knock the structure over. The challenge comes from balancing oddly shaped pieces and carefully positioning them as the stack becomes more precarious with every turn.
The biggest strength of Stack O’ Cats is its accessibility. It is incredibly easy to teach, takes almost no setup, and works very well with children or casual groups who may not normally play board games. Within a minute or two, everyone understands what they are supposed to do, and the physical nature of the gameplay naturally creates laughs and tension around the table.
The cat pieces themselves are also genuinely charming and probably the highlight of the entire experience. The colorful wooden components give the game a lot of personality and make it visually appealing in a way that helps carry the simplicity of the design. I really do appreciate how much personality was poured into the cat designs themselves. The Kickstarter campaign leaned heavily into collectible cat breeds and expansions, and honestly, that charm carries a lot of the experience. Beyond the colorful base game cats, there were additional breed packs featuring Tortoiseshells, Tabbies, Siamese, Tuxedos, Calicos, mascot cats, and other unique meeple designs, all illustrated with a ton of care and variety. The developers even highlighted that nearly 100 unique cat illustrations were created for the project, which really shows when the game is on the table.
However, as cute as it is I do think there are stronger dexterity games out there. While Stack O’ Cats is fun in short bursts, the gameplay is fairly limited and does not evolve much over the course of a session. I also wish there was a little more competitiveness or variety built into the system. Most turns feel pretty similar, and once you have played a few rounds, the experience starts to lose its novelty.
Still, the game succeeds at what it is trying to be: a quick, family-friendly balancing game that almost anyone can enjoy. It is especially good for kids because of how approachable and tactile it is, and the cute cat theme makes it easy to get people interested immediately. Also, as a cat lover, it’s adorable!!!
Verdict: Stack O’ Cats is a cute, accessible dexterity game that shines most as a family or kids’ game. The charming cat components and simple gameplay make it easy to enjoy for a few rounds, even if the overall experience is somewhat shallow compared to stronger games in the genre. It may not have the depth or replayability to become a long-term favorite, but as a quick, casual stacking game, it does its job well enough.
